Well because Aura-chic decided to update, I thought I'd do one too.
I am in the middle of hell at the moment. There was a fire to the south and east of me that was close enough we evacuated. There's nothing like packing up your car and on the way out looking at the burning hills and thinking... that's it, it's gone. Well after the three longest hours of my life, we were back in our house and about two hours after that, I was all unpacked again and everything was just as it was. Now, the fire is to the north and the west of us. I don't think we'll have to evacuate again but you never know.
Yesterday, when I was out I had seen the smoke along to the east, but I never thought it would get close. Well about four hours later, I was walking up the to community college near my house, the fire when we got there was still over hill once we got to the top of the hill it sits on, it was less then a hundred yards or so from where we were. It was weird to be surronded by so much smoke, feeling the winds pull at you as the first literally pulls the air from you to feed itself. I thought for sure the college was gone, but when I drove up to this morning, the incredible people of the fire department had kept it at bay. I wonder if the ranchers that had ran up into the hills after their horses were as lucky. When we got home, we started stuffing our cars full of what was important. I got all my sister's momento's she'd left at my grandmother's when she went off to Tennesse, a box of memories that I keep in my closet, my computer and my clothes. All done and ready to go we went to Brian's parents house.
My car looked like it was packed by a refugee, I guess I wasn't to far off. As I drove, I watched everything around where I lived lit on fire. The hills less then a quarter mile from my house, the fields off to the south, all ablaze. Everything on the way was afire to, it was like something had decided to place a ring of flame around the town that I live in. Even the area that was around Brian's parents house was burning. After settling in some we decided to go walk and see how bad it was around us. It was close, but moving away, after walking a couple miles as stopping for dinner we walked back. I kept everyone I informed that I was all right. Like I said, three hours after to left, we finally came back home, the fire around where we lived was under control. I was sore in more places than I'll relate, but after a little rest, I unpacked, and finally got some sleep.
I woke up this morning to learn that what wasn't on fire last night was on fire today. The fires this time were even close to the houses they were threatening. I had to go out to get gas for my car, I drove around where they fires had been yesterday, the ground was still smoldering, little tiny fires still burning.
So that has been my weekend. In all it's terror and glory. My roommates and I stayed calm though it all, I have to say I am very proud of them and I couldn't ask for a better couple of guys to live with.
Well that's it for now. I am going to go see how the fire is progressing. Until next time.
